Polo IV 2001-2009
In terms of its appearance, the fourth generation Polo could give some compact models a run for their money: a 15-centimetre increase in length overall and a wheelbase 5 centimetres longer compared with the previous generation made this Polo the most spacious yet.
4.1 million total production worldwide
This Polo generation now offered a luggage compartment volume of 1,030 litres with the rear seats folded down. Three-cylinder engines were introduced in the engine compartment for the first time. At the other end of the performance scale were the powerful turbocharged engines in the Polo GTI: 110 kW (150 PS), or 132 kW (180 PS) in the Cup Edition. Safety was paramount: front airbags, side airbags, power steering, and the anti-lock brake system (ABS) were now fitted as standard. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) including hydraulically controlled brake assist (HBA) was also available for an additional charge.
In 2001, the fourth Polo greeted the world with a new face and four clear glass headlights, taking up the design theme of the smaller VW Lupo.
In 2003, a notchback saloon became part of the model range. The body was 28 centimetres longer.
The car’s look was fundamentally revised once again. The Polo now had the new Volkswagen brand face, fresh front design and subtle V-shape to the grille.
A strong comeback – Polo IV GTI. It had a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine that now delivered 110 kW (150 PS), the model was a lightweight, coming in with a kerb weight of just 1,200 kilogrammes.
